A family nurse practitioner (FNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse with expert training in primary or specialty care for patients of all ages.

In many states, they hold independent practice privileges which grants them prescriptive authority and allows them to treat patients on their own in hospitals, clinics, or private practices to serve as the primary healthcare provider for individuals and families.
