My Father Dropped Out Of Sch To Care For His Family Says Lady Who Earned Masters Degree, Dedicate It To Parents

Pretty lady named Tope Nwoseh is dedicating her master’s degree to her parents. Her dad dropped out of school during his PhD program so he could care for his family.

Sharing the story on LinkedIn, she wrote:

Finally,
So, my school had to cancel graduation at the last minute due to an increase in covid cases, but since I already had my gown, I decided to shoot a few photos to celebrate my graduation.
There’s a big tale behind my smiles, and I thought it’d be nice to tell you about it.

I had always intended to pursue my graduate studies in economics at the University of Maryland. Something I’ve been thinking about since 2008.
My Father, you see, was a PhD student in the same department 30 years ago. He was ecstatic, and he had already begun his thesis (it was something around development issues in Latin America). At the time, my mother was a BSC student at Howard University D.C

My parents had me and my sister, and it didn’t seem realistic for both parents to attend school at the same time, so my father dropped out… to care for his family. My mother attended school and worked part-time as a nurse while caring for two little children until she graduated in 1992.

On the other hand, my father will never return to school. In 1994, the entire family departed the United States for Nigeria.

Even now, you can sense a touch of sadness in my father’s eyes as he reflects on what might have been, but he still gets enthusiastic when discussing economic matters.

See, I did this program for me, but I also did it for my parents, for my father, for the sacrifices he made to ensure that we, his children, were successful.

So, 12 years after receiving my bachelor’s degree, I returned to the same institution and department to earn a master’s degree in applied economics. And I dedicate this to all parents who make sacrifices for their children’s betterment…I am proof that the sacrifices are well worth it.

Of course, I am grateful to my husband Michael Nwoseh for supporting me and allowing me to pursue this dream despite the fact that it required us to be apart for nearly two years.

I am overjoyed and grateful to God.
