Kenya’s top athlete, Brigid Kosgei, a holder of several records, has a very inspiring story that would stir anyone into action at any time. Despite being a school dropout and mother of twins, the athlete did not allow those things to stop her as she said that her humble beginnings have always pushed her to achieve greater things, BBC News reports.
Her coach, Eric Kimaiyo, said that her dedication, discipline, and competitive spirit has been a driving force for her. Brigid Kosgei now trains with her male teammates to build endurance.
It should be noted that she was brought up by a single mother in Elgeyo-Marakwet, a region in the Rift Valley, a place that known to have Kenya’s top runners. Like other runners before her, her love for running started well when she was in primary school, saying that her 10km. “My school was 10km from home and sometimes to avoid getting late I would run. On my way I met athletes who were training and said to myself: ‘I can be like them,'” she said. As a teenager, her seriousness with the sport helped her to pay for just not her school fees but also her siblings. In a move to increase her endurance, she now trains with her male counterparts, a move she said has been very tasking for her but one that she has accepted as a required way for growth.
Legit.ng earlier reported that Athlete Brigid Kosgei, gymnast Simon Biles and tennis player Coco Gauff are three women who left many in awe after they broke records and made unforgettable history in sports over the weekend. Kosgei smashed Britain’s Paul Radcliffe record of 2:15:25 which had stood unchallenged for 17 years and made a new record of 2:14:04 on Sunday, October 13 in the Chicago Marathon.
