God has blessed me with another year in uniform.

Twenty-two years ago, I loaded a van and departed Chesapeake, Virginia, and did not look back. Despite some nagging frustrations with things beyond my control, I cannot think of any real regrets that overshadow all the fantastic experiences I have had. I have seen many states, set foot in more countries than I care to count, made the best friends of my life, and changed people who have changed me in return.

I never had a bad job, a bad temporary duty assignment, or a bad deployment. Never! Not even the ones to Iraq, Africa, the Philippines, and Afghanistan.

Meeting and becoming friends with people of other places, cultures, beliefs, and value systems have taught me tolerance and respect, and appreciation for friendship and family.

Enduring sacrifice and long absences have taught me the costs and the value of real human freedom. Few Americans are lucky enough to learn these kinds of lessons. It has made me an incredibly strong person, and I am grateful.

I am looking forward to more years in uniform and what God has in store for my family and me.
