A True Story

Growing up having Deaf parents was one of the challenges that I had to deal with everyday of my life. Especially at school when there’s parents meetings because I had to be part of the meeting to make sure that there’s no communication barrier between my dad and the Principal 🤷🏻‍♀️. Back in the days the were few people that understand or have knowledge about Deaf Community and that put my parents in a spot light of being called “ODOMI” growing up knowing that you have parents ezingo “DOMI” that sometimes killed my confidence because at times people will say things that I end up questioning God why me?

Being the first born at home forced me to be matured at the early age as I had to be my parents interpreter that lead on knowing all family secrets. The reality is that it was not easy, my friends at times when we are playing sigwarana they will say ” uthule wena utsho ngabazali abangodomi, betsho belinganisa their voices” as we know that some Deaf people they don’t have the “normal” speaking voice as Hearing people do.

Most of people were so confused that my parents were able to give birth to hearing kids because most of people they believed that being Deaf is a curse. Growing up in a hearing society can be draining at times😢😢 people ask strange questions☹, they can make you feel small😖. I thank God through it all I’ve made it.

Here I am today because of my parents, I will never be thankful enough for the things they’ve done for me🥰.

I am a product of Deaf Community and I’m Proud. 🤟🏻❤
