Meet Charlotte Muritala, The Nine-Year-Old Student Who Teaches Maths On TikTok

A nine-year-old student from Offa, Kwara State, Charlotte Muritala, has drawn attention on TikTok for teaching mathematics to other children through short online lessons.

Charlotte, a JSS2 student, uses a whiteboard, marker and smartphone to record lessons where she explains topics such as algebra, fractions, and the lowest common multiple in simple steps.

The young girl, who has 80,000 followers on TikTok, said she developed an interest in mathematics at the age of five.

In an interview on Channels Television, she said her interest in the subject stems from her love for numbers.

“I started liking mathematics when I was small. I love mathematics because I enjoy numbers,” she said.

She explained that she tackles difficult questions by breaking them into smaller parts and trying different methods until she arrives at a solution.

“First, I like breaking them into small parts. That makes it easier for me. So I break it into small part, then I solve it. Once I start solving the hard problem, if I am not getting it, I will go and choose the best method and start solving it step by step,” she said.

According to her, mathematics is enjoyable and not a burden.

“Mathematics is fun for me. Some questions are hard, but I like solving them,” she said.

Charlotte said her mother created a platform for her to share what she knows with other young learners.

“My mum created another platform for me to share what I know with other children. I feel very happy and proud of myself,” she said.

She added that she feels happy and proud to be able to teach others.

Her father described her as dedicated to her studies, noting that she spends much of her time reading.

“She’s always with mathematics. Every time, she’s always learning, reading every time,” he said.

He, however, said she still enjoys playing like other children her age.

“So she’s a child, and she’s still nine years old. Sometimes she plays, but when it comes to reading, she doesn’t joke with it,” he said.

Her mathematics teacher described her as a brilliant and outstanding student with exceptional skills and a strong passion for solving problems.

The teacher also called for more support for children with outstanding academic abilities, including access to qualified teachers, scholarships and proper funding.

“She is a brilliant and erudite student. Before taking someone as erudite, that means that person has exceptional skills in Mathematics. She has a passion for solving mathematical problems. In all, she is an excellent and outstanding student. If you want students to have interest in mathematics, secure the services of qualified teachers, give them scholarships and proper funding,” the teacher said.

Charlotte advised children struggling with mathematics to keep practising and not be afraid of mistakes.

“My advice to them is to never give up. They should keep practising every day and not be afraid of mistakes,” she ended.
