I let a mother die.

Almost…

This was about 3 years ago when a 22 year old female with a 2 year old daughter was in need of medical help.

She had been having chest pains and shortness of breath for the past 6 months.

She was told it was all in her head because her tests were normal.

But the correct tests were not done

For the simple reason that she did not have good insurance coverage.

That is when she came to see me.

My office staff checked her insurance and told her we could not take care of her because of her limited insurance coverage.

We could have let her die.

But…

Later that day, a staff member told me about a young woman who didn’t sound good on the phone and they did not schedule her in.

I immediately felt the need to call her even though I knew nothing about her at the time.

She could barely talk on the phone.

She said she was a single mom, with no job and no money.

She did not want to go to the ER because she had been there twice and each time, they sent her home without doing anything.

They said it was all in her head.

I made a house call that night, I told her I was going to come and see her.

Right away I noticed, she had shortness of breath and looked blue.

I took her to the nearest emergency room and had them do a CAT scan of her lungs which showed a large blood clot in her lungs.

I offered to pay for her tests since her insurance did not cover it.

She was a ticking time bomb ready to explode.

She was immediately given blood thinners and admitted to the hospital.

She made it.

She was discharged from the hospital 5 days later

She is now healthy
She is now happily married
She has a full-time job
And she goes to school at night

Everyone should have equal access to health care despite money, race or gender.

Do you agree?
