Sola Sobowale Expresses Concern At The Type of Single Men Now Available, Says “Where Are The Men?”
In the newly released Kunle Afolayan produced Netflix original series, Anikulapo: Rise of the Spectre, star Nollywood actress Sola Sobowale plays a charater by the name of Awarun who doesn’t marry, but instead uses and discards of men she sees fit.
During a new interview, Sola Sobowale was asked about that character and her opinion about the dynamics between men and women in a marriage. This led the mother of three daughters to express her dissatisfaction at the seeming absence of qualiy men these days, and how she was able to draw some parallels of that real life phenomenon to the character of Awarun in order to play the role convincingly.
Here’s what Sola Sobowale had to say about the whole thing.
Speaking during the interview, Sola Sobowale was asked “For you, Madam Sola Sobowale, there was this bedroom intimacy scene where your character “Awarun” alluded to the failure of masculinity as her reason for deciding she would rather stay single and not defer to the authority of any man. In your opinion, what should be the power dynamics between men and women in your ideal African/Nigerian marriage?” That’s when Sola Sobowale went on to respond:
SOLA SOBOWALE: In Nigerian culture, especially among the Yoruba, women are supposed to be under the roof of a man. That’s why we as parents wish for our children to be married. We call it Adeori. You will be respected when you’re married. You run the home and take care of the children with your husband. But as it is going now, where are the men? We’re talking about quality men. That’s what happened to Awarun. She was married but didn’t marry a quality man.
So she decided to be independent. That was what she did and got everything she wanted. If she needs a man, she gets one, uses him, and dumps.
