Man Who Loved Animals While Growing Up, Celebrates Becoming A Veterinary Surgeon

A man named Oyerinde Samson has shared a short story on how he became a vertinary surgeon, Samson who had love for animals while growing up as a little boy, celebrates his new status as a vertinary surgeon.

Sharing the news on LinkedIn, he wrote:

About a week ago, I was Inducted into the Veterinary Council of Nigeria, as a Veterinary Surgeon.

It’s been 7 years of blood and sweat, and even tears. Being a Veterinary Surgeon in Nigeria is not an easy feat. The training is a very rigorous one, and not for the faint-hearted. It is also a very niche profession, and it’s slightly difficult to explain what we do.

There was no unique time I can recall, that made me think of becoming a Veterinary Surgeon. It just came to me as an idea of ‘knowing more’ about animals than any other person or animal lover knows. For a very long time, I have always been an animal lover. While growing, I loved watching wildlife documentaries. The diversities in the animal kingdom fascinated me, and I have always had a soft spot for animals.

Studying Veterinary Medicine in Nigeria requires a lot of commitment, sacrifice and perseverance. I have seen people quit studying veterinary medicine after a few years into the programme. The curriculum is designed in such a way that, if not properly prepared, its rigour will completely break you down. It entails being always mentally-prepared, taking it one day at a time, never losing hope when you are faced with challenges along the way, knowing that everything is possible with God, and that success is a journey, not a destination.

Today, I hold a degree in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). All thanks to God, family, friend, colleagues, my teachers and instructors, and every other person that supported me in one way or another through my journey. I specially thank Dr Adetayo Amid, DVM, MVSc for his Invaluable support and mentoring during my clinical years.

I currently work as a Research Assistant in the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, University of Ilorin, Nigeria.

I’m also open to opportunities that will hone my skills in Veterinary Medicine, with a view to making contributions to animal health care delivery in Nigeria and across the globe.
