Man Who Accidentally Touched A Live Wire And Lost Both Arms At The Age Of 9, Finds Love, Gets Married
“I was 9 when I accidentally touched a live wire and lost both my arms. Growing up, I didn’t have many friends–no one could really look past my disability.
That was until Shivangi came into my life. We met at University; she was 2 months late to join, and as the CR, I was asked to help her out.
Shivangi was from an all-girls’ convent school; so, I could tell it was awkward when I asked her for her number on the first day! But she was sweet and even gave me a ‘Thank you’ note after class.
Over time, we started hanging out with the same group of friends. I was generally stressed–I’d gotten admission through the disability quota and felt like I didn’t belong.
Shivangi noticed that; so once, after class she said, ‘Let’s get coffee?’ We went to a café, and she asked me how I was doing. I told her about my insecurities. For the first time, I opened up about my accident.
After that, we got really close. We started going out by ourselves; I was new to Delhi, so she’d show me around; our long walks around Connaught Place were the best! People would give me weird stares, but she didn’t care!
We were inseparable, yet I didn’t know I had feelings for her until a year later when I went back to my hometown. I missed her terribly, so one night, I blurted out, ‘I like you’; she said, ‘Come back first!’ So after I got back, I threw her a surprise party and confessed, ‘I love you’ to her in front of all our friends!
Those four years of college were amazing, but then I had to move to Bangalore for further studies. That’s when we had a conversation about our future. She had no qualms about my disability and said, ‘You’re enough for me!’ So, we made long-distance work for the next 4 years.
So earlier this year, I proposed to her with her favourite croissants and hot chocolate on our sixth anniversary.
She said, ‘Yes!’ And within 2 months, we got married! Both our families came together to celebrate ‘us’. It was the best day of my life!
Every time I look at Shivangi, I feel like the luckiest man in the world! But when people look at us, they assume she’s my caregiver and that she’s ‘settled.’ But the social stigma has never bothered us, and it never will.
She’s the only one who saw me for who I am. With her, I don’t ever have to doubt if I’m enough. She loves me, I love her, and that’s the beginning and end of everything.”
