Safiyya Ahmad has won the 2019 BBC Hausa Short Story Writing Competition, beating 25 other competitors to the clinch the $2000 (N723,000) prize money. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Hajiya Bilkisu Yusuf, one of the judges, made the announcement of the winners at an award ceremony that was held on Friday, October 25, in Abuja.
She won with her story of Maraici, a story that traces the life of the girl who was abandoned right from when she was born. Grace later found her as she met her helper, Hajiya Babba.
Jamila Abdullahi Rijiyar won the first runner up position with a story titled Ba A Yi Komai Ba which loosely translates as Nothing New, while the second runner up was won by A Juri Zuwa Rafi (It’s a matter of time) written by Jamila Babayo. NAN also reports that the third edition of the prize in 2018 was won by Safiya Jibril. The winner of the competition does not only take home the prize money, they are also given a special plaque.
