How I Feel About Public’s Obsession With My Body – Tems

Nigerian singer Tems went from being known for ‘covering up’ and not showing anything to more tight-fitting clothes and bold fashion choices, and the switch in wardrobe has brought with it a lot of thoughts and opinions. In fact, right now, a video of Tems dancing on stage in a tight-fitting outfit is going viral on social media.

The truth is a lot of people have thoughts on Tems’ body and fashion choices, and now, during a new interview with The Breakfast Club, the singer is opening up honestly about how she feels about all of it. She spoke about her days wearing baggy clothes and why she did that, and spoke about the attention she gets now for wearing tight-fitted clothes. Here’s what Tems had to say about the whole thing.

Speaking once again about the times when she used to wear baggy clothes in the studio and why, Tems said:

TEMS: I didn’t know it was a thing but y’know it’s only when you do something in ignorance that you find out. So obviously, I was my normal self and I realized people’s reactions to me especially when I was 17/18 going around studios. So I started noticing that every time I come here, people don’t take me seriously. What is it? Why is this a thing? You’ve seen many women before, why is this such a huge deal? I’m just another woman. And then I realized that okay, if there is nothing, if they can’t see anything, then they have nothing to talk about or think about. But you know what, that also doesn’t work these days. But then, it did, to be honest.

Reacting to sentiments from the interviewer that it’s unfair that the burden be on her and not the men to control themselves, Tems said:

TEMS: Yeah, but who’s gonna tell them? Cuz I couldn’t at that time. I was going to studios alone. I would just take a cab and go meet somebody in a studio in hopes of getting help. I can’t naively say “well, you should control yourself”, that’s a bit mmm. Yes, you should. But in the meantime, I don’t have time to teach you what to do right now. Let’s just bypass all that. I need to get what I need to get.

Speaking about the public’s obsession with her body especially when she wears tight clothing, like in the video currently going viral of her, Tems said about if it bothers her:

TEMS: Not at all. Not at all. I don’t even notice it. Unless they’re telling me directly “oh you’re beautiful” or “you look good”, I’m not, I don’t even notice it. I just think people who are happy to see me, if they’re happy to see me because of my body, I don’t know. I don’t care. I’m just like, okay.
