I am heartbroken. Last week my best friend, soul mate and husband, Anderson, passed away.
He was diagnosed 10 months ago with stage 4 colon cancer. He fought so hard to stay here with his family and pushed through multiple treatments and life threatening side effects.
His cancer hid with no symptoms until it was too late. It was smart, aggressive, resistant to treatment, extremely painful, and unforgiving… but Anderson never gave up. He fought til the very end.
Like most gone too soon, my husband was a very special human who was loved by so many people. He was selfless, kind, quiet, and strong. His goal in life was to be an exceptional father, brother and husband. He succeeded. We were together for 16 years. To be loved by him is indescribable. He will be missed.
We know he is in a better place, no longer suffering and free from pain.
If he could share one thing with the world right now he’d tell every African American male over the age of 35 to go get a colonoscopy. This cancer is so easy to fix if caught early.
Going to the doctor isn’t enough. He always went to the doctor and never missed a check up, but it was missed because he was so young, had perfect bloodwork, and every test said he was healthy, but he wasn’t due for a colonoscopy.
Our medical team taught us that the suggested age of 45 years old is inaccurate for black men. Oncologists know that the American Cancer Society’s suggestions are not correct for people of color. They suggest getting checked at 35.
Please keep my family and our 3 kids in your prayers. It has been the hardest year of our lives.
We hope our story spreads awareness and saves lives.
RIH Anderson.
