As I look back at the last five years of my life as a Canadian immigrant, I can say I have had some highs and lows, gone through certain phases; I have asked myself deep reflective questions, wondering if I had made the right move or if I was on the right path.
One of those times was over four years ago when a work colleague from back home called asking how I was enjoying my new Canadian life while I was reading my application rejection letter after sending over 600 job applications, yes 606 to be precise (before I got my first HR job) and this was from the ‘Indeed’ job platform alone!
While I am still a work in progress, I can humbly say I am not where I used to be; This I am grateful for.. in this little journey, I have made some mistakes ( some I will be sharing in days ahead) I also learnt that big career decisions don’t come with a map, but all we need is a compass and a plan! So far, the journey has been fascinating,
I have received help in my life, and I am most proud that I have the opportunity to help hundreds of newcomers review their resumes, position them for jobs and prepare many for job interviews, which (most of them got the jobs). And to some, I have had the privilege to share hope and a ray of light in those depressing moments of doubts and sometimes disappointments!
Two years ago, I started a vibrant community of HR professionals with the vision of creating a platform for all and supporting each other in navigating the Canadian HR Space, and the results have been astounding; I am grateful!
I am living through the experience of “putting others first.” There are many plans to do more, part of it is breaking my public fear, yes, the anxiety of putting something like this out, but I choose to do this today as it may encourage someone out there. And if you are reading this trying to navigate the career path or asking questions on how to make the next move, below are some of the practical tips that have helped me in my sojourn and still helping me;
- Seek always to understand who you are and your life purpose beyond the ‘job.’
- Before you make that move, seek accurate information and guidance.
- Get mentors; someone knows what you don’t know, and they help you navigate life’s path.
- A clear path only comes from searching – Invest in knowledge- Be a lifelong learner
- Find out the relevant course and certifications in your field and invest!
- Seek out a community of like-minded professionals; if you don’t find one- create it and
- Never compare your journey to anyone, be your greatest competition while learning from others!
- Network, Network, Network.
Never settle for less; your value is transgenerational; be yourself, and even when you fail, learn from it, and then do it again and again and keep moving.
Thanks for reading my post; please feel free to add some of your lessons.
