Why Poor Men Often Have Long-Lasting Marriages— Singer Brymo Reveals

Nigerian singer Brymo has shared his perspective on why some men with limited financial means are able to maintain long-lasting marriages, arguing that it is not necessarily because their wives are also poor.

According to Brymo, many low-income men are self-employed and operate their own businesses, giving them control over their livelihoods and time.

“When I tell you that poor people have the longest marriage and stuff. It is because, have you noticed that all the poor men are vulcanizers, butcher, carpenter, who has his own shop,” he said.

He explained that some of these men go to farms or markets to source goods, process them and sell them themselves, while also having apprentices working under them.

“In fact, he has his own apprentice. That’s why the poor men can keep their wives. A woman does not want somebody to be taking care of her husband,” Brymo added.

The singer further argued that a man’s marriage is more likely to last when he earns even a small income but remains the person in control of his work and decisions.

“A man’s marriage will last longer if he’s making stipend and he’s the boss. Go and check anywhere,” he said.

Brymo stressed that the longevity of such marriages is not simply because the woman has accepted to live in poverty, but because the man remains independent.

“So that poor man’s marriage does not last longer because of the woman is also poor is a no. The man is a boss. No matter how small money he has, he’s the one in control of his life. He controls his own time. That’s all.”
