Why I Called Marriage “Zombie Plan” – Tems Defends Herself
About a year ago, Tems did an interview where she called marriage a “zombie plan” saying:
“TEMS: I had a job after I graduated. I had a job. I was trying to be a good girl [laughs]. A good girl is a girl that listens to her parents and gets a job and says okay, I’m trying to make my parents proud by showing them I’m going to get a job, get married, and do the thing. The robot plan. The zombie plan [laughs]. It’s a zombie plan and I was on that plan, and then I got signed. The thing is I’ve been writing music since I was like 11, and I was just like do I want to be here in the next ten years? Is this it? And I was just like nah, I would rather die than remain here.”
Now, during a new interview with Real 92.3LA, the singer is being asked about this comment she made. Here’s what Tems has to say now about calling marriage ‘a zombie plan’.
During her interview, Tems was asked “You once said getting a job, getting married, getting a house and fulfilling that kind of lifestyle is a zombie life” to which she responded:
TEMS: It’s yes, I possibly said that, yeah.
“Yes you said it. You called us zombies”
TEMS: Uh, no. I said it’s a zombie plan. But it’s not a zombie plan for everybody. For me, it was. If I was in that direction, it would have been, yeah.
“You graduated high school and then thought to yourself, okay I’m going to be a good daughter, follow the plan. At what point were you like: you know what, I have to be happy or I’m dead?'”
TEMS: I started realizing that um, I was really unhappy for a long time and I just don’t think that as a human, I wasn’t meant to be unhappy. Like, in my spirit you know what I’m saying. Life is too short for you to live life for another person.
I felt like I’ve paid my dues. I went to school. I finished school. Some people don’t, and you know, they paid my fees, I gave them back my grades. And now, I can be left alone to do what I want to do.
Today, they can’t even believe people are talking about me. Like I think it’s more of like a pride thing now. Like wow, that’s our daughter!
