Who Would Have Thought That The Daughter Of Little-Educated Petty Trader Would Be Conferred With Doctororate Degree – Proud Lady Celebrates

Proud lady named Mistura Salaudeen is counting her blessings as she was recently conferred with Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Communication and Journalism at Hong Kong Baptist University.

Mistura went down memory lane remembering the days she grew up with her mum who’s a petty trader. She never evisaged coming this far.

WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT?

On the 21st of November 2022, I was conferred the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Communication and Journalism at Hong Kong Baptist University. It was an exciting ceremony followed by a galore of merriment, but the question that lingered in my subconscious the entire time was “who would have thought?” 🤔

Who would have thought that the daughter of little-educated petty traders in the rambunctious Bariga market would, someday, ride on the waves of the prestigious HKPFS scholarship to study for a PhD? 🤨

Who would have thought that the girl who grew up in the shanties of Oworoshoki, Lagos would, one day, bag a Doctorate degree from an international university? 🤷‍♀️

So many ‘who would have thought-s?’ that I wouldn’t care to mention, ran through my mind and I realized that none, absolutely none, of this could be if God hadn’t declared it to be. 🙇‍♀️

The degree may be mine, but the ones who should be applauded and celebrated are my parents, Mr and Mrs M.J. Salaudeen, who literally sold the clothes off their backs to see my siblings and I through school. Come rain or riot, going to school was non-negotiable. We could starve but school fees must be paid. “The only wealth I can bequeath to you is a good education”, Daddy would often say.

Someday, I shall tell the awe-inspiring story of these two extraordinary people, but for now, I’m honouring them with the title – Dr and Dr (Mrs) M.J. Salaudeen. 😁

Once again, appreciation to everyone who felicitated with me. I’m grateful to all my professors at the School of Communication, Hong Kong Baptist University for their incredible and indelible tutelage.

I’m excited about this new phase of life and enthusiastic about the prospects that come with it.
