“This Is No Country For Old Men, You Have To Think Of The Future; You Must Remember Home”- Minister Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu Sends Message To Nigerians Living In The United States

Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu is Nigeria’s current Minister of Foreign Affairs and she recently confronted
Nigerians living in the United States.during the Town Hall Meeting in New York about the realities of remaining in the US in old age.

In her words:

“A few home truths needed to be confronted during the Town Hall Meeting in New York with Nigerians living in the United States.

‘Yes, America is a beautiful country’, I told them; ‘But America demands of you, your Youth, it demands of you, your strength, your vigor, your enterprise, your talent, your expertise…but this is No Country for Old Men. You have to think of the future; you must remember home’.

It is a country that offers great opportunities and great experiences in the best years of life when you are vibrant and functional but it comes with a price…

You must plan for your twilight years so you don’t end up in a deserted home sitting in front of the television watching endless episodes of Nollywood home movies or seated alone in a park bench wondering what number you’re likely to be assigned in a cemetery lot, reminiscing about the warm interactions and solidarity in the country you left behind, those relatives that you blanked out as parasites and even beginning to miss those village kindred and Umunna meetings that you once thought were beneath you.

Night falls quickly. My people have a saying which goes, ‘ You need to start searching for your missing black goat in the daylight hours….’
