Military gun truck kills 2 civilians in Damaturu road accident

    • Residents accused security agencies of always disobeying traffic lights, choosing instead to blare horns at road users as they speed through Two civilians riding in a commercial tricycle, popularly called Keke Napep, have died in a road accident after collision with a military truck at Gwange Junction along Damaturu-Gashua Road.

Premium Times reports that the incident occurred on Sunday, November 10 after the armoured gun truck ran a red traffic light and blindsided the tricycle.

According to eyewitness report, the truck was going at a very high speed and chose to disobey the traffic light, thereby running into the keke, which had the right of way at the time.

A 19-year-old undergraduate of the Federal Polytechnic, Damaturu, identified as Hussaina Baffa-Bello, was one of the victims.

Residents says it was common for security agencies, military and police alike, to disobey the traffic lights since they were fixed in 2018. In swift reaction to quell rising anger over the sad incident, Governor Mai Mala Buni visited the scene of the accident to placate the people. Also, the governor reported that top officers of the military command in Damaturu have visited the families of the victims to console them.

“The Brigade Commander 27 Task Force Brigade, the Commanding Officer 233 Tank Battalion and officials of the State Government have visited and commiserated with the families of the victims,” a statement from the governor’s office read in part.
