Man Who Applied To Over 50 Jobs, Lands Dream Job, Says Giving Up Is Never An Option

A man named Tekena Jim-George has shared his job search journey as he recently got hired by Equinor.

Tekena who applied to over 50 Jobs prior to this time shared a motivational post from his mentor, which says “rejection builds resilience”.

Sharing the exciting testimony on his LinkedIn platform, he wrote:

Super excited and grateful to have been accepted for a role at Equinor. Luckily, I got to meet and shake hands with the CEO Anders Opedal on my first day! Who would have thought?! I think it’s a sign of bigger things to come :

I applied to over 50 other jobs before this, and 4 times to Equinor, so I’ve had my share of rejections and heartbreaks. But as Dr Nike Folayan told me, “rejection builds resilience”, so giving up is never an option and thank goodness I didn’t.

I had invaluable support from transition events organised by Association for Black and Minority Ethnic Engineers (AFBE-UK).

I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to improve their confidence in interviews and assessment day activities.

Also, my current line manager Diogo Bezerra let me know that having communication experience was one of the deciding factors in my selection. So don’t neglect ANY opportunity to learn and grow.

Also, having a solid network is VITAL. If you’re looking to grow your network, the upcoming #AFBELive22 conference will be a GREAT opportunity to meet with fellow students, professionals, and possibly mentors. Employers who are looking to hire will be there, so go with your CV and be ready to engage! WSP, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, Balfour Beatty plc, Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) amongst others are some of the sponsors of the event. There is also going to be a fireside chat with John Amaechi OBE and Yewande Akinola MBE. I will be attending along with professionals I look up to. Check out afbelive.com for more information and get your tickets.

Getting a job is much more than just your CV! Take advantage of every opportunity and don’t minimize the importance of people in your life.

Many thanks to My parents, Dr Ollie Folayan CEng FIChemE, Claire Grant – MCIPD my mentor, Chukwudi Okenwa (CEng, Imeche), Niyi Balogun TUV FS Eng, Ibim Diri, Adaeze Okafor, for your support!
