Lady Who Flew Alone From Nigeria To Ohio At Age 18, Graduates With BSC, Lands Job As A Mechanical Engineer, At Illinois

A young lady named Karen (Car-en) Elisha-Wigwe has shared her journey to success as she graduates
with a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Miami University College of Engineering and Computing.

Karen was only 18 year old when she flew alone from Nigeria to Ohio, she just landed a job as a Mechanical Engineering Intern at Brunswick Corporation at the i.Jet Lab facility in Champaign, Illinois. She has sure made her family proud.

Sharing a lengthy post with her graduating photos on LinkedIn, she wrote:

On Saturday, May 14th, I graduated Cum Laude with a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Miami University College of Engineering and Computing.

Indeed it has been an enlightening and amazing journey, one of self-discovery, character building, and establishing many intentional and unintentional but all the same exceptional relationships! I am grateful to God for the many miracles, small and mighty.

To my family for their unwavering support and encouragement. Thankful for the friends I made, the amazing faculty and staff, NSBE, and the many colleagues I had during my time as a student specialist and shift leader in the dining halls, peer tutor at Rinella Learning Center, Resident Assistant in Withrow Hall, peer mentor for the Miami Leadership Academy, and Graduate Assistant for the College of Engineering and Computing.

Looking back at the young and timid 18-year-old that flew alone from Nigeria to Ohio, I can say that I am many million steps closer to the engineer I dreamed of becoming. Certainly could not have done this alone.

This summer, I will be working as a Mechanical Engineering Intern at Brunswick Corporation at the i.Jet Lab facility in Champaign, Illinois. Next fall, I will continue with my Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Miami University. I cannot thank everyone (and it is a long list) enough for every part they played in my journey this far and I am excited for what my future holds!

Love and Honor!
