Influencer And TikToker Sandra Benede Recounts How Her Uncle Relocated Her To The US

“I was on the bed sleeping when I got a phone call from America. It was my uncle, my dad’s younger brother.

He actually went to America with his wife. He played the lottery and he didn’t win, but his girlfriend then won.

So when she won the lottery, she was given the opportunity to carry anybody she want along. Luckily for him, his girlfriend included his name. At that time, they were dating in school.

They both came to America together, became citizens and had kids.

He played for me. He played for me just one time, and I won. He didn’t tell me when he played for me. He never told me.

I remember the last time he came to Nigeria to pay his wife’s bride price. Before he left, he asked for my passport. Then I was in primary school.

When they were younger, my dad and him were very close and inseparable. My dad took care of him and everything.

The visa lottery was still available then and he was good at it. He didn’t tell anybody about it, not even my dad. He only took my passport, date of birth and information he needed to play the lottery and left.

I don’t know how many years later, I was in UNIPORT, in my second year at that time. I always wanted to be an actress. I was doing modelling and pageantry, so I wrote my uncle in America a proposal, telling him I wanted to act in movies and needed money for it.

So when he called me that morning, I thought he was calling to tell me he had the money to give me. He said, and I will never forget those words, ‘Do you have a favourite song?’

Because he’s a pastor in MFM, he asked if I knew any favourite song I could sing. In my head, I was like, ‘If you want to give me money, just give me.’

Then I sang, I Can See Everything Turning Around in My Favour. He said, ‘Keep singing.’ Then he said, ‘Indeed, God has turned your story around.’

I said, ‘Ah, uncle wants to give me the money.’ It was the money that was in my head. I had no idea. Then he said, ‘You won a visa lottery.’ I said, ‘Eh? How?’

He said, ‘You just won a visa lottery. That means you’re coming to America.’ I can never forget that day. I was so excited, very happy.

That was how I relocated to the US…”
