“I Feel Mentally Drained Whenever I Play Bipolar Roles In Movies”- Sharon Ooja
Sharon Ooja, the Nollywood actress, has opened up about the emotional and mental challenges she endured while portraying a character living with bipolar disorder.
Speaking in an interview on Arise TV, Ooja said the role gave her a deeper empathy for people dealing with mental health conditions.
The film star described the experience as mentally draining, explaining that transitioning between extreme emotions for the role required significant effort.
“I think that because it was more mentally draining for me; when you’re a normal person playing a bipolar role, it’s a lot of work,” she said.
The actress said the experience deepened her understanding of what people living with mental health conditions go through.
Ooja also recounted how her director frequently had to correct her during filming, noting that she would unconsciously revert to a normal emotional state.
“This gave me so much empathy for people actually dealing with mental health issues because it was draining,” she said.
“My director would sometimes have to call me because he’s like, you’re not staying on tempo, you’re going back to normal, you can’t be normal.”
The 35-year-old actress explained that constantly switching between emotions was particularly difficult, as she had to portray crying, anger, and laughter within the same performance.
“So, it was so draining having to be crying, laughing, angry so many emotions in one.”
