On May 6th, I graduated with my MBA from Rice Business – Jones Graduate School of Business
Three years ago, I took a leap of faith and relocated back to my hometown after the sudden passing of my mom. Little did I know, leaving NYC and returning to Houston would provide a clearer vision and path toward achieving both career and personal goals.
I began my business school journey with no children and am now a proud father to my 15-month-old son Jaxon, and 2-month-old daughter Jalisa. I was able to balance and excel in my coursework, serve as Co-President of the Finance Association, and as a Rice Business Board Fellows for Urban Enrichment Institute — all while being a very present father to my kids, and loving husband to my wife. Of course, none of it would be possible without the unwavering and selfless support of my wife Jasmin Matos-Aré, MPA.
Perhaps the greatest thing I learned in business school that I will carry forward is that it’s possible and important to excel in your career and contribute to your firm, while having a present and loving impact on your family.
I’ve been fortunate to have several great mentors that have imparted wisdom and guidance over the years. A special thanks to Tym Tombar, who has shared his invaluable perspective over the past few years, and provided mentorship after I relocated back to Houston. Thanks to George Van Amson, who while I was at Morgan Stanley in NYC, emphasized the importance and power of an MBA for African-Americans. His words “I’ve never met anyone that has regretted getting an MBA” catalyzed my efforts to pursue business school and now I too pass along the same declaration when speaking to aspiring MBA applicants.
I look forward to stepping into the next phase of my career and am excited to be returning to Goldman Sachs as an Investment Banking Associate in Houston, TX.
Congrats to my classmates, it’s been a pleasure learning and creating wonderful memories these past two years. Thanks to the amazing professors and a few of my favorite Utpal Dholakia, Alan Crane, Brian Akins, Balaji Koka, Kunal Sachdeva, and Kevin Crotty, the Rice Business Admissions team, Career Development Office, and SPO. A special shoutout to The Consortium for Graduate Study in Management and Toigo Foundation, organizations that have done an amazing job in providing a pipeline of opportunities for students of color at top business schools and companies. These past two years have been truly transformative and one to celebrate!
Congratulations to him.
