
Humanitarian Worker Sh%t De@d By B@ndits While Returning From Fieldwork In Sokoto
A humanitarian and field operations professional, Lydia Chinenye Nwankwo, has been k+lled in a b@ndits’ att@ck in Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
Her sister, Chisom Nwankwo, confirmed her de@th in a Facebook post on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, stating that Lydia and her team were att@cked while returning from fieldwork on Tuesday, October 6.
“B@ndits att@cked her and her team and sh%t her de@d,” she wrote.
The Sokoto State Police Command also confirmed an att@ck on communities in Shagari, although it said it was still gathering information about the incident and casualties.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, told Punch that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Shagari had confirmed the att@ck.
“I just spoke with the DPO in charge of Shari now, who confirmed the att@ck on some communities in the local. We are still on it. I cannot give details now until I gather my information about the incident. I will get back to you on it,” Rufai said.
The att@ck followed reports of armed b@ndits moving around farmlands and communities, particularly towards Sanyin Nawal village.
A separate account alleged that the b@ndits moved through farmlands, stopped vehicles and r%bbed travellers before proceeding through surrounding villages. A motorcycle was also reportedly set ablaze.
The account further stated that the att@ckers encountered a passenger vehicle around Maghrib while returning and opened fire.
A police inspector identified as Isah Muhammad Girkau was reportedly hit by a b¥llet and later d+ed from his injuries.
However, the police command has yet to officially confirm the officer’s identity or provide further details about the circumstances surrounding his de@th.
