He Cried On His Graduation Because He Could’nt Afford A Suit, Today He Has Secured A Dream Job, Bagged A Second Degree Wearing Expensive Suit
Dumisani Ngobese, a young man who had gone viral last year for crying on his graduation bags second degree.
The young man who was raised by his grand mother and could not afford a formal wear had come in casual clothes.
A business man had been moved by his story and gave him a job. One year later he bagged another degree, this time he came properly prepared for the occasion.
Dumisani Ngobese, a University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) graduate, overcame the odds after growing up with a harsh upbringing characterized by an impoverished home in which his mother and grandmother did their best to make ends meet.
The 23-year-old told Briefly News how his life altered drastically after becoming viral when he showed up to his graduation without having enough money to buy a suit.
Dumisani was raised by his mother and grandmother in the village of Bhukhanana, which is located outside of eMpangeni. In the home where there were more than 10 children, his grandmother worked as a street seller and was the only source of income.
He mentioned that he had wanted his gogo to be there when he received his BA, but she was unable to do it due to health reasons.
“My family is so proud of me. They are so thrilled that they can finally say there is a graduate in the family.
Even to this day they still talk about my accomplishment. “When I cried on that graduation stage, a lot of things were going through my mind. My childhood, difficult background, and hard journey up until that point just came to me all at once at that very moment as I stepped onto the stage. I was feeling so proud.” He claims that a bachelor’s degree in arts is wide and enables him to pursue a variety of sectors and occupations. He double majored in English and tourism, and he plans to pursue an honors degree in the field, which he claims has long been his passion.
After the University of KwaZulu-Natal posted pictures of Dumisani’s graduation on social media, he said he couldn’t believe the attention he received. “I thought I’d just attend my graduation and go back to rest in the afternoon. I expected life to just carry on as normal. Next thing, people are talking about me on Facebook and re-sharing my photos. “Nothing could have prepared me for the influx of comments, messages, calls, and DMs I received from people I didn’t even know congratulating me.
I became a celebrity overnight. I was shocked, even now I still am.” Calvin Mathibeli, head of the Calvin and Family Group of enterprises and a Durban businessman, reached out to Dumisani less than 24 hours after his tearful graduation in an effort to help him better his situation and assure a bright future. Ngobese’s tale touched him so deeply that he made the decision to give the recent graduate a permanent position. Additionally, he has agreed to pay for Ngobese’s Honours degree studies at UKZN, which he is presently pursuing.
Because he was also brought up by his grandmother in a large family, the 35-year-old businessman claimed that Ngobese’s story spoke to him. “I’ll be acting chairman for Calvin as he is always away on business. It is all very exciting and still feels like a dream. This is so big,” Dumisani said. Jacinta Ngobese, a radio presenter for Vuma FM, also threw him an incredible graduation celebration recently at the Hilton Hotel in Umhlanga, making sure the graduate’s grandma and the rest of the family were there.
His grandma and the rest of the graduate’s family were invited to an amazing graduation party that Jacinta Ngobese, a radio host for Vuma FM, recently hosted at the Hilton Hotel in Umhlanga. His advice to other youngsters on a similar path as his: “People should be positive and focus on their studies. Despite life’s challenges, they are capable and can do anything they put their minds to.” Ngobese claimed he couldn’t afford a suit for the formal event at last year’s graduation.
He donned a white pair of sneakers, black chino slacks, and a black golf T-shirt. However, this year, Ngobese came dressed to kill, as he collected his honors degree. He wore a tailored navy suit, a white shirt, striped tie and brown formal shoes.
On his Facebook page, Ngobese expressed his gratitude to everyone who had helped him and had congratulated him on receiving his honors degree. A year can make a huge difference. Thank you, South Africa,” he posted.
