The Worldwide Tribe, a non-profit shared Tesfay’s inspirational story.
With relentless determination, a young asylum seeker identified simply as Tesfay, who fled to England to seek greener pastures has graduated with a first-class degree from the South Bank University.
Tesfay had moved from the Calais Jungle, a refugee and migrant encampment in the vicinity of Calais, France to the UK carrying along hope in search of a better life in the UK. He arrived in a lorry with only his clothes on his back seeking accommodation in Bolton. Tesfey’s exceptional story has been accentuated by The Worldwide Tribe, a non-profit organisation that witnessed the resilient young man’s journey from the refugee camp to earning a degree with first-class honours.
The Worldwide Tribe wrote on Facebook: ”This is Tesfay. We met in the Calais Jungle in 2015. In the photo on the left he had just arrived to the camp and didn’t even have a jacket, let alone a tent. We gave him one and helped him set it up, then visited him regularly in the months that followed. I will never forget the day he made it to England. He came inside a lorry with only the clothes on his back. We went to visit him in his asylum-seeking accommodation in Bolton. It was a bloody long drive but I was so excited the whole way. We brought him some bits we thought he would need and planned to take him for lunch, but he’d already prepared food for us when we got there.
I don’t know how he managed that on the £5 daily allowance you live on as an asylum seeker in the UK – you’re not allowed to work during that time either so he’d been saving it up for days in advance. Anyway, this week, four years on, he graduated from South Bank University with a first class honours degree in engineering and an award for ‘Best Graduating Student.
Watching him graduate made my heart literally burst with pride. Against all odds, he made his dream come true….and now he’s reaching for the next one!”
