A suit seeking to compel the governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele to provide details of financial donations received by Nigeria in relation to the coronavirus pandemic has been granted by a Federal High Court in Abuja.
The Nation reports that the suit which seeks to compel Emefiele to give an account of the COVID-19 donations was filed by a group called Heda Resource Centre.
In a ruling on Monday, November 30, Justice Inyang Ekwo, granted leave to Heda to seek an order declaring that the failure of the CBN to provide the information on the donations, among others, amounts to a violation of the applicant’s rights. Abuja court okays suit compelling CBN governor to account for donations received to fight coronavirus.
Justice Ekwo in the ruling went on to note that Emefiele who is listed as the sole respondent will release a detailed list of donors’ names, sources of the donations, and the amount received by the apex bank. The suit empowers the group to apply for an order of judicial review and mandamus to compel the CBN governor to disclose and make a comprehensive breakdown of the donations received.
