Don’t Borrow to Fund Weddings And Parties, Use The Money for Your Family Instead — Peter Obi
Former Anambra State governor and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has advised Nigerians against spending beyond their means on weddings, birthdays and other celebrations.
Speaking about his personal experience, Obi revealed that he has been married for more than 30 years and that only a small number of people attended his wedding.
“Nobody will ever tell you today they attended Peter’s white wedding because the number was few. In each case they were not more than one dozen.”
According to him, he and his wife deliberately chose a modest wedding because they preferred to invest their money in their home rather than spend it on entertaining guests.
He warned that many couples fall into debt after organising extravagant ceremonies, saying financial pressure often leads to disagreements in marriage.
“Don’t go and do nonsense celebration. You have a child one-year celebration, two-year celebration, that is not school fees. Use that money to pay the child’s school fees.”
Obi also urged people to avoid unnecessary birthday parties if they cannot comfortably afford them.
On Nigeria’s electricity challenges, he said he had visited several power plants and pointed to Egypt’s progress as an example of what is possible.
“Egypt was generating less than 20,000 megawatts by 2016. By 2021, it is generating over 45,000 megawatts. As me and you speak, Egypt exports power to Europe.”
Obi said he met with contractors working on power projects in both countries and questioned why similar results had not been achieved in Nigeria.
“Why is it working in Egypt and not working in Nigeria? They told me it is a Nigerian problem.”
