  • The lawmaker who represents Borno south senatorial district made the statement on Monday, June 8
  • Ndume recommended for palliatives to be given workers to supplement the salary cut.

The federal government has been advised by Senator Ali Ndume to cut the salaries of those in its workforce due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The senator who represents Borno south senatorial district told Channels TV on Monday, June 8, that salaries of government workers can be cut since they are yet to resume work fully.

Senator Ali Ndume has advised the federal government to slash the salaries of workers in order to cut cost.

Ndume, however, recommended that palliatives should be given to the workers to supplement the salary cut. He said workers should be ready to make sacrifices this period in order to reduce government spending.

He questioned the rationale behind paying workers full salaries when they were sitting at home because of the coronavirus pandemic. The federal government had asked the civil servants to stay at home in order to check the spread of COVID-19. However, as part of measures to ease the COVID-19 lockdown, the federal government directed civil servants on Grade Level 14 and above to resume work as from June 2.

The directive was issued by the head of the civil service of the federation (HOCSF), Folasade Yemi -Esan.
