After spending 12 Years In UK, I Miss Home – Nigerian Lecturer Reveals

Emmanuel Mogaji, a faculty member of the University of Greenwich, UK, is one of the many Nigerians representing the country well abroad. An Efon-Alaye indigene in Ekiti state, he bagged his first degree in architecture from the University of Lagos before proceeding to the UK for his MA and PhD.

In an interview with Rasheed Adebiyi on Tekedia platform, the Nigerian said he has been in the foreign country since he went there to school.

“I came to the Uk to study my Master’s Degree and after Master’s Degree, I stayed back to work and I went in for my PhD studies and since then I have actually been here. I came in through education route, that’s why I have been here. Well, the journey so far, I can say it has been fine,” he said.

On why he moved from his architecture background to advertising and marketing communications, the Nigerian said he had to switch because an MA in architecture was expensive so he had to settle for the arts. When asked how he was able to adapt fast to the education terrain in the UK, Emmanuel said that it came with “taking responsibility…, asking questions, meeting people like interacting and knowing how they went about it”.

The academic said that what he misses about Nigeria is “the vibe and bustling”. He said he missed the human interactions.

“I guess what I miss more about Nigeria is the community, the vibe, and the bustling. I will say I miss the excitement of life in Nigeria, the engagement with people, the buying and selling in the market. I mean the interaction and even the street food,” he said.
