One af the most frequently asked
questions when i started Genevieve Magazine was; “why now why not when you were younger?”
Understandably, and unlike now, 46 was pretty old to become an entrepreneur or even just BECOME.
This question often deepened my anxiety and triggered a fear that, what if I was indeed too old to embark on a journey that I had no guarantee I would
SUcceed in.
Then one day as we queued to help ourselves to a buffet at a party someone asked me the same question.. As I attempted to answer, a lady named Nneka
blurted. There’s an igbo saying:
Mgbe onye ji tete ura bu ututu ya which when translated means “when ever one wakes up is her morning”
It was a much needed motivation.
It made sense that my first editorial in my column
This went “viral and it became for many a quote in season. 20 yrs later I still get asked about that quote and how it inspired many. A few have argued though that this saying is only 4 people without vision… oh well!
Not for me though because once I understood that our timings and purpose in life are different and that our footsteps are ordered by the Lord whose timing is perfect i was able to focus more and forge ahead without worrying about if was starting off early or late. As we journey on in life there will be many reasons to doubt our choices & timings.. we may worry about marrying late, having children later
than others, starting a career, returning to school, becoming an author, developing more skills, investing in that project, chasing a childhood dream, going for therapy to address a childhood trauma or just getting up and saying its time”
Theres never a perfect time TO BE. TO DO.
When you find the courage to be, to do then that’s a perfect time.
