“They Finish A 12-Hour Day Shift, Rest For Just A Few Hours, Then Head Straight To A Night Shift”- Lady Shares The Tough Reality For Nigerians Living In The UK
A young lady named Lisa Agu on facebook has shared the tough realities of some Nigerians living abroad on Facebook. Lisa expressed how most of them work 12 hours shift and at the end they face pressure from their loved once in Nigeria makimg incessant demands.
In her words:
“The Untold Side of Working in the UK 🇬🇧 or Abroad!!!
I once saw a man who had been working back-to-back 12-hour shifts in this UK 🇬🇧.. His hair was unkempt, his beards hadn’t been shaved in weeks Abi months..
He looked like he was carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.
He wasn’t lazy, he was drowning in pressure from home.
And that’s the reality for many Africans abroad 🥹🥹!
The minimum wage is about £12.21 an hour. On a standard contract of 37.5 hours a week, you take home around £1,800–£1,900 a month. This is the basics, some people earn more, depending on your job and other benefits!!
That’s enough to pay rent, live decently, and even save a little, if you stick to your hours.
But here’s the problem, many don’t stick to that hours!!
They finish a 12-hour day shift, rest for just a few hours, then head straight to a night shift, 🥹🥹!!

Why? Because of constant phone calls from home,
“We need money for this. Don’t forget the house project. Remember your younger brother’s fees.” the pressure to meet up dikwa too much!!!
And in the process, people forget themselves.
Their hair mats into unintentional dreadlocks. Clothes pile up. The beards is untouched.
Some ladies carry the same hairstyle for months because they’re too exhausted to care 🥹🥹
But let’s ask the hard questions nobody wants to ask,
If you collapse and die at work, will your family back home stop eating?
Who will finish that house project if you’re gone?
Who will take care of the dreams you’re killing yourself for?
The truth is.… life goes on for them. But for you? It ends.
Working abroad doesn’t have to mean killing yourself.
You moved abroad for better life and not to turn yourself to a working machine..
A standard job gives you 2 to 3 days off every week.
You can live decently without destroying your body. Don’t let guilt and pressure rob you of your health.
Because at the end of the day, all those things you’re sacrificing for won’t mean anything if you’re not alive to enjoy them.
Work smart. Rest well. Live long enough to enjoy the fruit of your hustle.
we can all win together ❤️.
I am Lisa Agu and I wish you good luck ❤️!!
