Strong Criticism From The Media And Political Opponents Affected Me At The Beginning Of My Administration, But I Remained Courageous — President Tinubu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has acknowledged that intense scrutiny from the media and public commentators influenced his early days in office, admitting that the pressure initially made him somewhat stubborn as his administration began.
Speaking on the role of leadership and decision-making, the President revealed that reading newspapers every morning is a routine he rarely skips, describing it as an “addiction” that keeps him connected to public opinion and national conversations.
According to him, he reviews headlines daily, paying attention to words and narratives that reflect the mood of the country, even when he does not read every story in full detail.
Tinubu explained that the strong criticism and heat coming from newspapers and opinion leaders at the start of his administration shaped his early reactions. However, he emphasized that leadership ultimately requires courage and responsibility, especially when difficult decisions must be made.
He noted that governance demands timely action, stressing that failure to take necessary decisions at the right moment amounts to failure in leadership.
The President added that while public opinion and media coverage remain important in a democracy, leaders must remain focused on making decisions they believe are necessary for national progress, regardless of criticism or pressure.
