Proud Lady Celebrates Becoming A Barrister In The UK
A young lady named April Lamai has announced that she just became a Barrister in the UK.
April took time to outline all the challenges she encountered before finally suceeding in her career.
Read her post below as shared on LinkedIn:
“Don’t bother trying to become a barrister in the UK. The stats are against you, it’s harder for black people, and transferring from Irish Law will prolong your journey”, I was told.
If I had listened to the above advice, I wouldn’t be here to testify that today I became a barrister.
- I moved to the UK (on my own) to pursue the Bar. A pathway not many willingly take.
- I didn’t have any legal connections, I didn’t know anyone.
- I didn’t come from a wealthy background.
- I didn’t have a British accent, and was told that my Southern Irish accent did me no favours. Thankfully I ignored this comment.
- I didn’t allow a failed exam define me. I kept going, and I passed.
- I kept going even when no one in the room looked like me.
- I even kept going, despite having Covid during one of my Bar exams. (disclaimer: it was a remote exam and nobody was hurt except the tissues!).
I am a living testimony that what seems impossible, is possible with faith, hardwork & consistency – so please keep going.
Thank you to my incredible family, friends & mentors. Today wouldn’t have been possible without you and I am forever grateful.
Most importantly, thank you God. You are the potter and I’m simply just the clay.
