“Night Shifts, In The Cold, Doing Cleaning Jobs, Factory Shifts, Caregiving, Or Retail—Even With Master’s Degrees”- Nigerian Lady Outline The Things They Won’t Tell You While Deciding To Move Abroad
Nigerian Lady named Floxy TV on Facebook has taken time to outline the realities of living abroad that no one tells those planning to move abroad.
Sharing on Facebook, she wrote:
“I WISH I KNEW THESE BEFORE I LEFT MY COUNTRY…”
That phrase is too common among those who newly relocated.
Before you make that move, let’s be real, there’s a side of living abroad that social media doesn’t really show you. It’s not just fine streets and foreign accents. It’s real life.
First of all, Google won’t tell you everything. You need to speak to people who are already living there. Not the ones always forming ‘soft life’ online, but the ones who have done night shifts, cried in the cold, and wondered if they made the right choice. They’ll give you the real tea.
Abroad life is structured. No room for sentiments. Everything works based on systems and processes. If your documents are not complete, your application is simply rejected. No “abeg,” no “my uncle knows someone.” Once it’s a no, it’s a no. And crying or begging won’t change it.
That mindset even extends to dating. As a guy, if you approach a woman and she says she’s not interested…please move on. Don’t press, don’t beg, don’t try to “change her mind.” That thing wey dey work for Naija no dey work here o. In fact, pushing too hard can get you reported for harassment. Over here, ‘no’ means NO, and I honestly respect that part of the culture.
And for those thinking money or material things can buy attention especially with women…nah, it doesn’t really work like that here. Most women are independent, and a flashy car or designer bag won’t move them. You have to come correct.
Also, be ready to drop your pride. That degree you’re holding may not mean much in your new country. Many people start from scratch…doing cleaning jobs, factory shifts, caregiving, or retail—even with Master’s degrees. Abroad will humble you fast.🤣🤣
Please don’t relocate just because your friend is doing it. Canada, UK, or Australia may work for them, and be a struggle for you. Your journey is unique. Know where fits you best and why you’re going.
One more thing……you won’t “blow” immediately, and that’s perfectly okay. The first year is usually survival mode. (Only few people make it within the 1st year😊) You’ll question yourself, miss home, maybe even cry. But with consistency, it gets better. Stability is the real flex, not the loud moves.
And even though Google isn’t everything, don’t ignore it either. It’s your best friend. Use it to research job markets, visa routes, schools, cost of living….in fact, everything. Don’t just jump blindly.
Lastly, start small but start now. Get your passport. Save money. Learn skills. Make connections. Every little step counts. Time is ticking, and the best time to start preparing is now!!!!!!
Bottom line:
Relocation is not a cruise. It’s a full-blown project. One that needs sense, sacrifice, and serious planning.
If you’re not ready to do the work, don’t bother chasing the dream”.
