For many of us, Christmas is the most wonderful time of year filled with so much love, joy and hope for the new year, and yet for people without shelter, this time of year is a bleak reminder of how unkind life can be.
This morning I drove down to Northeast DC with my church outreach team in single-digit weather (7 degrees Fahrenheit, -13.89 degrees Celsius) to share blankets and other basic necessities to our neighbors experiencing chronic homelessness.
A special thank you to the Bdesh Foundation who shared Subway sandwiches and hot meals to the community as well. What an eye opening experience it was. Until you walk through the streets of DC, you may not be able to understand the magnitude of the problem. As the temperature continues to drop in the DMV, I am shocked by how little people have to keep warm.
As at November 2022, approximately 4,410 people are experiencing homelessness in the most powerful city in the world. I have so many questions about how this is acceptable and even more questions about how to address the root causes.
Nevertheless, the truth remains that no one should be without food and shelter in frigid weather. This Christmas season, my plea to you all is to remember those who have fallen on hard times. Remember those who are without a blanket, a warm meal and shelter. If it is within your means, please give, but at the very least, please be kind.
