Nathaniel Bassey Recalls Humble Beginnings In Shomolu, Lagos And How God Lifted Him From Obscurity To Global Ministry

Renowned gospel minister and convener of the Hallelujah Challenge, Nathaniel Bassey, recently shared an emotional story of his early life and spiritual transformation, leaving many deeply moved.

Speaking passionately, the worship leader recalled his humble beginnings in Shomolu, Lagos and how God lifted him from obscurity to global ministry.

“You’re looking at a young man that God has helped,” he began. “I was born in Shomolu. I used to live in Folagoro, passing through Akoka, Buni Jesha, Bajulayi, and St. Finbarrs. This is glory, Jesus is the definition of glory.”

Nathaniel narrated how he studied Urban and Regional Planning for two years, often spending time in the chapel praying.

“I prayed so much that when I missed a day, even the security man would notice,” he said.

Despite being active in church at the time, he admitted he wasn’t yet in Christ.

His plan was to attend Berklee College of Music in the U.S. and become one of the world’s greatest musicians but God had other plans.

“One day, I had an encounter with God. My eyes opened, and I fell in love with Jesus with reckless abandon,” he shared.

He described how he would walk from his home on Tumashe Street, praying in tongues all the way to LUTH, unaware that God was preparing him for future ministry.

Reflecting on his transformation, he said: “I came from religion and entered into a relationship. Some of the songs you hear today were birthed in the secret place while waiting on God.”

He urged the audience to seek a genuine relationship with Jesus, not just church attendance.

In a heartfelt altar call, Bassey emphasised that true peace and purpose come only from Christ.

“It doesn’t matter what your past looks like. His blood is deeper than any sin,” he declared, as many in the crowd raised their hands to surrender their lives to Jesus.

His testimony stood as a vivid reminder that God can raise anyone, from any background, for His glory.
