He was only 6 years old!
At 6 years old, I lost my left eye due to a fatal injury in primary school. I was hospitalized for days but my parents had to take me home since the cost of the surgery is far above them. As you can imagine, things never remained the same.
I became slow and reserved because what I used to do with 2 eyes has only one eye left to do it. I couldn’t read as fast, I took a bit more time to comprehend what I see.
At 9, my parents divorced and things got worse. They fought over the custody of myself and my 2 siblings. My dad won the boys and mom the only girl. At home, I was met with a fierce step mom who vowed to make the lives of my brother and I miserable. Trust me, she did. We were prevented from seeing my mom for a long time.
High school is not for the weak, I was brutally bullied but I found the bullies in school better than the one at home.
Early years in high school, I barely finished my exams and mid-term tests just because I needed more time as I process things a bit slower. Asking for more time only attracted stigmatization rather than empathy.
High school made me realize no one is coming to help and I have to show myself that I can do it with ONE EYE and that even the slow and steady gets to the final destination.
With ONE EYE I have won the regional award and the best student in junior and senior high school. With ONE EYE, I graduated university with a first class and as the best graduating student in my department. With ONE EYE I won the Mastercard Foundation scholarship that funded my master’s program in Canada.
With ONE EYE I have met with the World Bank president, and I still have many more to show the world!
THIS IS MY STORY!
