4 years ago, I made the decision to leave my family, friends and a really good job to move to canada. A country where I had no friends except for one.
Starting all over in a new country wasn’t going to be easy but I was determined to succeed.
I made this decision because I wanted a better life for my future kids.
I knew that the country I grew up was no longer the same, things had changed and I wanted to give my kids better opportunities.
Before I got to Canada I decided I was not going to apply for jobs outside my profession.
To give myself an edge, I took my professional exam before leaving Nigeria.
Shortly after I arrived I started applying for jobs, I put in so much effort because I was determined to get that job as an IT Project manager.
There were so many rejections but I kept applying.Throughout the process which took about 3 months I must have applied for at least 100 job roles.
Eventually my tenacity and resilience paid off and I got a job as a Project Manager even though I had no Canadian work experience.
The organization took a chance on me and decided to offer me my first Canadian job.
Today I am in the fintech industry working for one of the best fintech companies in the country and I can say that my first job prepared me for this role, every experience is relevant.
My dream of living and working in Canada would not have been accomplished if Canada did not open her doors to immigrants like me and I am very thankful for the opportunity.
Today I am also proud to call Canada my country.
This entire process taught me a few things
- Do not give up on your dreams but also understand that it might not happen as quickly as you want but patience and perseverance pays off.
- Enjoy the process while waiting for your dream to become a reality and also work on improving yourself by acquiring new skills. I took online courses on LinkedIn while applying for jobs to improve my knowlede and skills.
- Set goals and work towards achieving them. It was a tough decision to not take just any job while I wait for my ideal job but I did. I was able to make this decision because I didn’t have any family or kids to support at the time.
Just hold on to that dream and keep putting in the work and it will eventually all come together.
I am grateful for the many blessings including my husband and daughter; and I look forward to the next chapter in this wonderful country I now call home.
