Lady Born With One Hand Is Happy To Start Harvard Medical School, Says This One Hand It’s Going To Save Lives
A lady named Malikiya Hinds has shared how she’s gradually fulfilling her dream of becoming a doctor, as she was born with one hand.
Malikiya just gained admission into
Harvard Medical School and would be joining Class of 2026. She recounts how many people try to talk her out of her dreams, but she was determined.
She announced the amazing news on LinkedIn, read her post below:
It’s OFFICIAL. I am going to Harvard Medical School and joining Class of 2026.
I am truly going to be a doctor 👩🏾⚕️🩺
Mini thesis statement: This is truly a BIG moment in my life. 🥹 When was a child I always dreamed of becoming a physician. As a little Black girl born with only one hand in Trinidad 🇹🇹 my intersecting identities made it hard to realize this dream.
I had never seen a visibly “disabled” Black women doctor and there were many naysayers along the way who attempted to a discourage my ambition with the memorable “yuh caynt do xyz with one hand.” Ngl I believed them for a long time and didn’t even attempt to say out loud for many years I wanted to be a doctor bc it wasn’t believable or attainable right? WRONG ‼️
I always talk about leaving Trinidad on my own to move to the USA in 2016. But that was a really defining moment in my life where I challenged EVERY UNTRUE notion I had about myself and my capability of achieving all the things I knew I wanted to do in life. Far outside my comfort zone, I reignited that dream.
This moment is a culmination of so much hard work, sacrifice, fighting imposter syndrome and surrounding myself with incredible people (especially my family) who supported and encouraged me throughout this journey into medicine.
This moment right here is for childhood Mali and all the people who never saw themselves represented in the spaces of science and medicine cause she’s bout to be a whole physician 🥹 for the people who think they can’t BUT ACTUALLY CAN.
This one hand here gon save lives. 🤌🏾 and that’s on future #DrMali.
