“I Once Collected Yams And A Chicken”-Tim Godfrey Shares Experience As He, Respond To Those Criticising Gospel Artist For Collecting Charging Fees, Says Gospel Artistes, Like Others, Have Bills To Pay And Families To Support
Gospel singer Tim Godfrey has defended gospel artistes who charge performance fees, recalling how he once received tubers of yam and a live chicken as honorarium early in his career.
He questioned how such gifts could sustain a family, stressing that gospel music requires financial investment in rehearsals, travel, and production.
Godfrey argued that charging fees doesn’t make artistes less spiritual but ensures they can continue their ministry sustainably.
Award-winning gospel singer Tim Godfrey has responded to critics who condemn gospel artistes for charging performance or appearance fees, saying many fail to understand the sacrifices and responsibilities behind their ministry.
In a recent statement, the Nara crooner shared his frustration with those who expect gospel musicians to perform for free, revealing how, in the early days of his career, he was often underpaid or not paid at all.
According to Godfrey, there was a time he received “tubers of yam and a live chicken” as honorarium after performing at a church event, an experience he described as both humbling and eye-opening.
“I once collected tubers of yam and a live chicken as honorarium. Is that what I’m supposed to use to fend for my family?” he asked rhetorically, emphasizing that gospel artistes, like others, have bills to pay and families to support.
