“I Have Cried, Laughed, Cleaned Toilets, Been Fired, Been Hired, Evicted By A Landlord… Later Became A Homeowner”- Nigerian Man Reflects As He Celebrates 17 Years Of Moving To The UK

Nigerian man named Toyyib Adewale Adelodun on Facebook has celebrated 17 years of moving to the UK.

Adewale recounts moments when he
cried, laughed, cleaned toilets, was fired, and hired, yet evicted by a landlord…but later became a homeowner.

Adewale went further to admonishes young youths aspiring to move abroad.

In his words:

Exactly 17 years ago, I landed in the UK with 2 bags and hope. Don’t pack your bags until you read this.

“Nothing could have prepared me for the shock that unfolded.

I have cried, laughed, cleaned toilets, been fired, been hired, evicted by a landlord… later became a homeowner.

And sadly, I have attended the burials of friends we started this journey together.

If you are planning to travel abroad, here is what I wish I was told:

  1. Don’t be desperate.
Desperation is how scammers eat. “I must travel this year” has cost many people everything.
  2. The right visa is better than a rushed one. Student, skilled worker, global talent… choose wisely. The wrong visa can turn your dream into a nightmare.
  3. If you dont have a lot of money, chase scholarships, followed by tuition-free countries (Germany, Iceland, Czech), then low-tuition ones (e.g. France, Italy).
  4. Be clear about your intentions.
E.g Are you studying to travel or travelling to study?

The country will get what it wants — your money, youth, sweat, and taxes.
Make sure it is not a one-way transaction.

  1. Your first circle abroad will shape your journey. Be open-minded. Join communities, serve, network.

The truth is, the grass does not turn green when you land. You have to water it with sweat, patience, and faith.🙏

God bless you.”
