I fend for my family with the profit I make from selling water – Corporate bottled water seller

Iloduba, a 24-year-old guy who has been tagged the corporate bottled water seller, has shared his passionate story with Legit TV stating what prompted him to start selling water on the streets of Lagos while wearing suits.

The young man hails from Anambra state even though he was born and bred in Lagos. He started the bottled water business in February 2019 and has been going stronger day by day. The quest to find a job and be independent made him start the business. Iloduba explained that he had gone job hunting on a fateful day when he got stranded. He did not get the driving job he had hoped he would get and was low on cash because he had moved from place to place. As a result of this, he trekked for a long time and was not close to getting home.

He also said he had nothing to eat that day as he had set out very early in the morning.

The young man revealed that his self-esteem was low as the two hundred naira left on him was not enough to take him home. He told the correspondent of Legit.ng who stood beside him during the interview that he was frustrated. He looked around and spotted a young boy hawking water. The secondary school dropout approached the boy after he had thought about selling water too with that money left on him.

The water seller did not take him serious at first as he was wearing a suit and looked too serious for the job. He wants the world to know : At last, he was able to convince the boy who then showed him where to buy the water from.

He got a bag of sachet water for one hundred and thirty naira and was made to rent the bowl that would be used in selling it for ten naira. This made his initial cost price one hundred and forty naira.

He sells up to ten packs of water daily.

Iloduba said that as soon as he stepped out with the bowl of sachet water in hand, the first thing that came to his mind was ‘corporate water’. People rushed to him as soon as he shouted this. Within minutes, he had sold out the bag. He ended up selling up to fifty bags of water that very first day. The corporate water seller said that his father is a driver while his mother supports him with the little she makes from her petty trading.

He is the firstborn of his family. He has two siblings who he now trains with the proceeds he makes from his little hustle. Being stranded opened his eyes to the business.

Iloduba told Legit.ng that he could not make it to the university because there was no money to further. He was a science student whose dream was to be a mechanical engineer. He intends to continue once he has made enough money.

Wearing a suit to sell bottled water is a major marketing strategy. The women selling water in bowls became threatened by him and tried to sabotage his business. When his usual water supplier stopped selling to him, he moved on to another seller. His dream was to be a mechanical engineer as he was a science student.

Another challenge that he talked about was his shoes getting damaged every time due to trekking. He said that he switches from corporate shoes to rain boots when the weather gets bad.

Iloduba told Legit.ng that he makes up to two thousand naira daily apart from his transportation and feeding. When he has finished selling the bottled water, he closes and moves on to being a conductor. He follows a bus that is going towards the direction of his house. The young man wants people to come to his aid as he has plans to expand the business and make it a known brand.
