How Jason Njoku Failed At A Blog Network, A T-shirt Business, And A Web Design Company, Before He Became Successful In Nollywood Online Distribution Business (Irokotv)
Jason Njoku just like a lot of successful entrepreneurs has failed in different attempts, for Jason, after several failed enterprises between 2005 and 2010, which included a blog network, a T-shirt business, and a web design company, he moved back home to his mother’s house in Deptford. It was there that he came up with the idea of starting a Nollywood online distribution business.
Having studied the industry from afar, Njoku flew to Lagos, he worked from a two-bedroom apartment in Festac, Lagos, and struck a deal with YouTube in Germany to be the official channel partner for the Nollywood company.
He used the platform to stream the licensed Nollywood movies, for free, on his channel, Nollywoodlove. The channel became hugely popular and was profitable in a short period and was the focus of several press features in the international press, including CNBC, CNN, and Techcrunch.
In 2015, Njoku decided to focus the company’s attention on an Android mobile app, rather than a streaming platform to combat broadband infrastructure problems that Africa poses.
In 2017, IROKOTV won the ‘Online Television with Best Movie Content Award’ at the City People Movie Awards.
Today, Irokotv is one of Africa’s first mainstream online movie streaming websites, providing access to over 5,000 Nollywood film titles. We celebrate Jason Njoku for utilizing technology to promote the growth of the entertainment industry in Africa.
