Governor Fintiri Grants Pardon To Adamawa Farmer Sentenced to Death For Killing Herdsman in Self-Defence
Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, on Tuesday granted a Christmas pardon to Sunday Jackson, the farmer who was controversially sentenced to death after killing a herder while defending himself during an attack on his farm.
Jackson’s case had sparked widespread outrage among human rights activists and farming communities, who insisted he acted in self-defence. Despite this, he was convicted and later transferred to the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in Abuja, where he spent years on death row.
Over time, the case came to symbolise what critics described as the criminalisation of farmers who are attacked while protecting their lives and livelihoods, fuelling calls for justice and legal reform.
Exercising his constitutional
prerogative of mercy, Governor Fintiri granted Jackson a full pardon as part of activities marking Christmas and the New Year, following recommendations from the Adamawa State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy and based on his conduct while in custody.
The decision sparked relief and celebration across Adamawa State, particularly among rural farmers.Although two other inmates were also pardoned and five had their sentences remitted, it was Jackson’s freedom that dominated public conversations across the state.
