Edo Doctor Freed After ‘N50M Ransom’ As Family Mourns Slain Brother

A medical doctor abducted in Auchi, Edo state, has regained his freedom after his family reportedly paid N50 million in ransom.

Ibrahim Tahir, the doctor, was kidnapped alongside his younger brother, Abu Tahir, on January 2, 2026, at their residence on City Pride road, Igbira camp.

The duo were abducted while opening the gate to their compound after returning from work.

Abu, a newly graduated medical doctor, was killed by the abductors while in custody.

His body was discovered by the Orle river near Down City Pride road, Igbira camp, on January 5.

The kidnappers initially demanded N200 million for both victims, later reducing it after the killing, with reports varying between N100 million and N40 million before settling at N50 million paid in two tranches — N20 million and N30 million.

Father of the abductees told journalists that the ransom was raised through family efforts, donations from non-governmental organisations, friends, and well-wishers.

He said Ibrahim sustained a bullet graze to his leg during the ordeal and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Meanwhile, vigilantes and hunters reportedly ambushed the kidnappers prior to the release, with one sustaining gunshot wounds.

“My son has been released after we paid N50 million. I feel good that he is free, but I have also lost another son,” the father said.

Eno Ikoedem, the spokesperson of the Edo state police command, confirmed the release on Thursday.

“I can confirm to you that the doctor has been released,” the spokesperson said.

On Saturday, the Edo chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), directed doctors in the state to withdraw their services over the abduction of two colleagues.
