The Christian Assembly Church in Los Angeles has made a bold and very generous gesture by paying off $5.3 million of the medical debt owed by 5,555 families in its community. The pastor of the church, Pastor Tom Hughes, explained that this was done in partnership with a non-profit organization called RIP Medical Debt that buys medical debts at huge discounts and sells them to establishments. Hughes said that the act is to demonstrate to the beneficiaries the love and mercy of God, CNN reports.

Talking about the impact of the move on the community, Hughes said: “It will end all the harassing phone calls from the debt collectors.

“But not only that, we will work with the credit agencies to repair their credit score for the impact of these unpaid medical bills.”

The pastor said that the payment of the debts will remove the financial burden from the shoulders of the sick persons in the community and help them bounce back to life without having to face pressures and poverty.
