A friend had informed me of an opening at the Lagos State Government for a Consultant in Grant Management role for the Lagos State Ministry of Health (LSMOH).
I applied, got interviewed and was selected for the role alongside another person who has now become a friend. And that was how I started my #career in #government.
Here are some lessons I learned in the one year I spent working at the LSMOH:
- No experience is a waste (I can’t overemphasize how I saw first-hand that grant management is crucial to #publichealth work)
- Being professional all the time is great, but what is even better and gets the job done faster is being diplomatic
- Be open to learn from other people who are more knowledgeable on a subject (my colleague whom we both got the job had more experience in the grants management terrain, so I gleaned all I could from her)
- No knowledge is ever a waste, especially when you’re asked to go for a training that doesn’t exactly seem related to your job description
- Always have a can-do attitude; be diligent at your tasks too because you never know who’s watching
- Always speak up when you’ve done the work and it looks like someone else is getting the credit
- The LSMOH is definitely different from any other government parastatal. They work so hard 😃😃😃
- Maintaining good relationships with everyone can save you when you least expect it (I had this good relationship with the security guys and janitors; I somehow enjoyed exceptional favours from them from time to time)
- Being a young person working in a government parastatal is an opportunity to bring in fresh ideas and learn from the civil service system.
Would you work in government as a young person?
