“I Avoided Earrings In The Past Because I Couldn’t Afford Them, Not For Religious Reasons” – Tope Alabi
Nigerian gospel singer Tope Alabi has sparked reactions online after revealing why she avoided earrings, jewellery, and wigs during the early years of her music career.
In a widely shared video on Sunday, Tope Alabi explained that her decision was driven by personal circumstances rather than any divine directive.
She stated that God never instructed her to refrain from wearing jewellery or wigs.
The gospel singer shared that at the start of her career, she avoided earrings, chains, wigs, and other accessories simply because she could not afford quality ones.
She pointed out that many misunderstood her simple appearance, believing it was a spiritual choice when it was actually due to financial constraints.
She also mentioned that her choice of outfits depends on the type of performance she is set to deliver.
She partly said, “God has never told me not to wear earrings, chains, or wigs.
”I’m a theater practitioner to the core, so I understand what fits each song. If a song does not require me to wear earrings, I won’t use them in the video. In the past, people assumed I avoided earrings for religious reasons, but the truth is, I simply could not afford them at the time.”
Tope Alabi’s remarks have stirred mixed reactions, particularly from fans who remember instances where she appeared to sing against wearing jewellery and wigs.
